How To Increase Your Golf Driving Distance

By John S Williams

Increasing your golf driving distance is one of the goals that sits high on the list of every golfer. When listening to your golf buddies, you might think that your golf driving distance is a measure of how good a golfer your are.

But there are several aspects to this key ingredient of your golfing game.

Some initial reasons to increase your golf driving distance would be:

1. To get closer to the pin after teeing off. This would certainly save you some shots and prevent having to play off your long irons or fairway woods.
2. It would reduce your handicap. Of course, playing less shots means a healthier handicap.
3. Increase in confidence. Even though this sounds a bit macho, being able to tee off and drive the ball more than 200 yards towards the pin will do wonders for your confidence.

You need to remember that hitting further is not the only way to make par. Say you are teeing off on a 250 yard par 4. If you hit 200 yards you still need to play a short club to get onto the green. If you only hit 150 yards, you still have to play a short club to get onto the green.

The lesson here is to really make sure you have your swing nailed before adding the power and speed necessary to send the ball further.

Remember, there are some issues that need to be addressed when trying to increase your driving distance:

1. Consistency. Swinging the club with a little more power will give a greater margin for error. There is no point driving 250 yards if your ball is going to hook or slice to the adjacent fairway!
2. Concentrating on power instead of fundamentals of a good swing. Don't forget that if you are going to be swinging faster and harder, when you do make a mistake, it is going to be a big one. You need to be sure that your swing is perfect and consistent before you start to beef it up.

Hitting the ball a with good distance is a magical feeling. But you need to be able to do it accurately or there are often heavy prices to pay that will do nothing for your score.
